Description of this ministry: Families, youth, and individuals travel to Rio Bravo, Mexico in July each year to build casitas for deserving families. We also provide Mission Bible School (like our Vacation Bible School) for the neighborhood kids. Sometimes, we also work on community projects such as building things in the city park. Mission participants will be divided into teams of 12 - 14 who will work Monday through Wednesday to build the house, and then will gather with the family on Thursday to dedicate the house. There is time during the work days to interact with the neighborhood children and families, and to get to know the team's own personal "adopted" family. The teams themselves will also develop into a tight-knit, close group that will likely remain life-long friends after we return home. It is truly a life-changing event, both for the St. Matthew people and the Mexican families. Trust in God, hear His call, and say "yes!" to the call to action!
How is ministry making an impact in the community/the world?
Families in Mexico receive sturdy homes to replace ramshackle, inadequate housing that is often pieced together from left-over and cast-off materials. They are often there while the team is working and will take part in the work of construction. They will see first-hand how God's love is being demonstrated by the gift of the team's time and labor to help them improve their lives.
How is St. Matthew making an impact through this ministry?
Families are provided with an opportunity to serve others, to participate in life-changing events, and to fulfill God's purpose as stated in James 1:27a: "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress..."
Specific opportunities to serve:
Travel to Rio Bravo for 1 week and serve on a construction team or serve on a Mission Bible School team.
Stay home, but help prepare materials for MBS, seek donations of clothing, shoes, school supplies, kitchen and household goods (new!) to send on the trip.
Make monetary donations to fund scholarships for others to go.
Pray for the success of the teams.
